Party like Edward G Robinson 120 on 12-12

You, Me and Edward G on December 12th

Edward G Robinson born Emanuel Goldenberg (December 12, 1893-January 26, 1973) was a Romanian-born American actor. His family came to the US when he was ten years old.

He changed his name to Edward G. Robinson (the G. signifying his original last name). He is quoted as having said: "I know I'm not much on face value, but when it comes to stage value, I'll deliver for you."

December 12, 2014 enjoy an Edward G. Robinson-a-thon on Turner Classic Movies (TCM), a mini-marathon of his movies.

Edward G. Robinson would have been 120 on 12/12.

In 2013 there was an Edward G. Robinson-a-thon Turner Classic Movies (TCM), a mini-marathon of his movies. Please note this post was written in 2013. Unless otherwise stated, dates and information given primarily refer to are for at least one year in the past.

The films shown on the third pf 2013 were:
The Last Gangster (1937) with James Stewart
Bullets or Ballots (1936) with Joan Blondell
Brother Orchid (1940) with Ann Sothern and Humphrey Bogart
Little Caesar (1931) with Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Glenda Farrell

Robinson happens to share a birthdate with Frank Sinatra.

A Hole in the Head, 1959, Sinatra and Robinson made together. Thelma Ritter is also featured. While filming, the press also talked about a nasty feud between co-stars Carolyn Jones and Eleanor Parker.

On December 12, 2013 TCM had a mini Sinatrathon. Frank Sinatra's birthday is December 12, 1915.

You can celebrate both their birthdays on December 12th. And boy, what a party that would be! Be sure to play a lot of good Sinatra music and if you want to order pizza, well, the the brand you choose is just up to you....

Chazz Palminteri created and narrated a very good tribute to Robinson

Raoul Walsh's Manpower (1941) with Marlene Dietrich and George Raft. A fine Noir trio.

Other favorite Robinson films include Double Indemnity (1944) alongside Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray and Key Largo (1948) with Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart, Lionel Barrymore and Claire Trevor.

He appeared on the classic game show What's My Line five times. Including being the Mystery Guest on October 11, 1953.

He was also a painter and his paintings show up for sale now and then.

"Acting and painting have much in common. You begin with the external appearance and then strip away the layers to get to the essential core.

"This is reality and that is how an artist achieves truth. When you are acting, you are playing a part, you are being somebody else. You are also, at the same time, being yourself."

Robinson's final role was that of Sol Roth in Soylent Green, 1973. He costarred with Charleton Heston, Joseph Cotten and Chuck Connors.

There are biographies of Robinson such as Little Caesar: A Biography of Edward G. Robinson By Alan L. Gansberg, but I tend to look first to autobiographies and biographies that are written based on the person's own words somehow.

"If I were just a bit taller and I was a little more handsome or something like that, I could have played all the roles that I have played, and played many more. There is such a thing as a handicap, but you've got to be that much better as an actor.

"It kept me from certain roles that I might have had, but then, it kept others from playing my roles, so I don't know that it's not altogether balanced."

-- Edward G. Robinson

The Women is a 1939 American comedy-drama film directed by George Cukor. The film is based on Clare Boothe Luce's play of the same name.

This version was distinctive for the fact that there were no men in the film, even the babies who appeared were little girls. It's said that animals in the film were female even books shown on the shelves were by female authors.

There's a knock-out cast including, aside from the three shown above, Joan Fontaine, Paulette Goddard, Ruth Hussey, Mary Boland, Lucile Watson, Marjorie Main and Butterfly McQueen.

It was remade as a 1956 musical comedy, The Opposite Sex, starring June Allyson, Joan Collins and Ann Miller.

In 2008, Diane English created her own version with the same original title, writing and directing. Stars included Meg Ryan, Eva Mendes, Annette Bening, Jada Pinkett Smith, Bette Midler and Debra Messing. This was English's feature film directorial debut.

As a side note, as with many films of this era much of the set design is interesting and impressive. The Women has one of the most extravagant bathrooms and bathtubs in film; for those of you who like that kind of thing.

In 1972, Rosalind Russell received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, a special Academy Award. She was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar four times in her career.

They Are Family Hollywood Walk of Fame Scavenger Hunt

Celebrity family members who have
Hollywood Walk of Fame stars
next to or near one another

Mary Martin
Autographed/Hand Signed 8x10 Photo
Mary Martin was born December 1, 1913 in Weatherford, Texas. She would have been 100 in 2013. She was only 76 when she died in 1990.

Martin was best known for her films and for her stage work such as Peter Pan, South Pacific.

Playing Maria in The Sound of Music on Broadway won her a Tony Award.

She was also the mother of actor Larry Hagman, from I Dream of Jeannie and Dallas.

Have you ever visited the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles? Mary Martin has two stars (for Music and Radio).

Larry Hagman has a star. Hagman's star is right next to one of Mary Martin's stars, each located at 1560 Vine Street.

Everybody's a dreamer and everybody's a star,
And everybody's in movies, it doesn't matter who you are.
There are stars in every city,
In every house and on every street,
And if you walk down Hollywood Boulevard
Their names are written in concrete....

-- short excerpts throughout from Celluloid Heroes, The Kinks

Parents and their Kids,
Walk of Fame Stars near one another

This got me wondering about other family members who may have stars next to or near one another. Ready for a Hollywood Star scavenger hunt? I could use some help with this one because I've only found out about a handful and have had help so hoping all the information is accurate. I believe that stars are occasionally moved, such as when John Lennon's star was moved so that all four Beatles' stars could be close together by the Capitol Records Building. So the info here is as accurate as possible.

The stars of Carl Reiner and his son, Rob Reiner can be found at 6421 Hollywood Blvd. Lloyd Bridges' star sits in between those of his sons, Beau and Jeff Bridges at 7065 Hollywood Blvd. Lloyd and Jeff got their stars in 1994, while Beau received his in 2003.

Tex Ritter is next to his son John at 6631 Hollywood Blvd. Just as Allan Jones 6100 Hollywood Blvd is beside his son, Jack Jones 6104 Hollywood Blvd.

Laura Dern's star is close to those of her parents, Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd. They are separated by one star above (James Coburn) and one below (Peggie Castle) all at 6270 Hollywood Blvd.

Bruce Dern won the Best Actor award at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival for his role in Alexander Payne's Nebraska. Laura Dern attended AFI Festival gala screening of the film at the iconic Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

Antonio Aguilar has a star at 7060 Hollywood Blvd. right next to that of his son, Pepe Aguilar.

Jayne Mansfield Photo above* 8X10

Jayne Mansfield and her daughter, Mariska Hargitay (Law and Order SVU) are next to each other at  6328 Hollywood Boulevard. Ms. Hargitay's Star Ceremony held in the fall of 2013.

The stars of singers Vicente Fernandez and his son, Alejandro  Fernandez are one star apart, at 6160 Hollywood Blvd.

You can see all the stars as you walk down Hollywood Boulevard,
Some that you recognize, some that you've hardly even heard of.
People who worked and suffered and struggled for fame,
Some who succeeded and some who suffered in vain.....

Siblings' Stars near each other Walk of Fame

How about famous siblings? There are lists already that mention siblings like the Jacksons, Osmond Family, Lennon Sisters, Smothers Brothers and the Oleson Twins who share a single star.

Harpo Marx from The Marx Brothers Go West
Vintage Original 8X10 Studio Still Photo

Groucho Marx has two stars but there doesn't appear to be a star for the Marx Brothers or any of his brothers individually.

Janet Jackson's star has the same street address as the star for her brother's group, The Jacksons, 1500 Vine Street, but they're actually several stars apart. Walking distance definitely. Michael Jackson's individual star is located at 6927 Hollywood Blvd.

But the stars of sisters Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle are separated only by Carl Smith. Rick (1515 Vine St.) and David Nelson (1505 Vine Street) are also one star apart. Jack Benny is between them!

Some things seemed funny. Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly beside each other. Penny Marshall is closer to Cindy Williams than to her brother, Garry Marshall. Fans will like to see Laverne and Shirley.

Everybody's a dreamer and everybody's a star
And everybody's in show biz, it doesn't matter who you are.
And those who are successful,
Be always on your guard,
Success walks hand in hand with failure
Along Hollywood Boulevard.
....

Couples, Married Celebs stars near each other
On the Walk of Fame

There are more stars of couples, including married couples, than I would've thought near one another. Some married couples, such as Sonny & Cher, Ozzie & Harriet Nelson, Stiller and Meara share a star. Mickey Rooney shares one of his stars with wife, Jan.

George Burns and Gracie Allen
Autographed/Hand Signed 8x10 Photo

For some reason Gracie Allen has just one star, for television. Her star and that of her husband, George Burns' star for Live Performance, have the address 6672 Hollywood Blvd.

Bob Hope's Live Performance star is next to that of his wife, Dolores Hope at 7021 Hollywood Blvd. Gloria and Emilio Estefan's stars are next to one another at 7021 Hollywood Blvd.

Roy Rogers & Dale Evans Signed 8x10 Photo Autographed PSA/DNA Certified

Dale Evans' star for TV (1737 Vine Street) is near Roy Rogers' star for radio, 1733 Vine Street.

You can find the stars of Allen Ludden 6743 Hollywood Blvd. and Betty White  6747 Hollywood Blvd. next to each other.

Richard Burton Elizabeth Taylor collectible photos

In 2013 Richard Burton received a star on the Walk of Fame. His star resides beside that of former wife, Elizabeth Taylor. You can find them at 6336 Hollywood Blvd.

Maybe you saw one of the Burton and Taylor biopics that aired around this time. In October 2013, the BBC aired Burton and Taylor, starring Dominic West (The Hour, The Wire) and Helena Bonham Carter (Les Miserables, The King’s Speech). Lifetime TV in the US presented their own version in late 2012 Liz & Dick with Lindsay Lohan and Grant Bowler.

Proximity of Stars: Some Walk of Fame landmarks may have the same address but can be actually 30 or more stars apart. Some may have different addresses and be side by side. So their proximity may be next to each other or it may be negligible.

Consider Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen whose stars have the address 7021 Hollywood Blvd. Unless the information I received is incorrect, the two stars aren't very close to each other.

The first stars on The Walk of Fame:
Joanne Woodward is one of a handful of celebrities who were the first to get stars on the Walk of Fame back in 1958. Her star is located at 6801 Hollywood Blvd. However, Paul Newman's star is 7060 Hollywood Blvd.

"On August 15, 1958, the Chamber and City unveiled eight stars on Hollywood Blvd. at Highland Avenue to create excitement and to demonstrate what the Walk would look like.

"The eight honorees included: Olive Borden, Ronald Colman, Louise Fazenda, Preston Foster, Burt Lancaster, Edward Sedgwick, Ernest Torrence, and Joanne Woodward."
-- excerpt from Walk of Fame site

By the way.....

The Walk of Fame star for Matt Groening 7021 Hollywood Blvd is approximately 8 stars from the star awarded to The Simpsons! The stars of Walt Disney and Charles M Schulz are among those in between.

December 5th, the designers on Project Runway All Stars will be faced with a challenge of designing a dress for Marge Simpson. Taking her personality, uh ... proportions and hair color into consideration I'm sure will be part of the challenge.

In January 2012, the designers on Project Runway were asked to create an outfit for fashion icon, Miss Piggy.

Jim Henson collectible photos, more

Jim Henson, Kermit the Frog, Big Bird and The Muppets all have stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Edgar Bergen, Shari Lewis, Paul Winchell, Fred Rogers and Fran Allison are other puppeteers or ventriloquists who have stars.

Do you remember Labyrinth, the 1986 David Bowie film directed by Jim Henson, produced by George Lucas? Look for some cool photos and clippings from that film and other Henson collaborations.

The lyrics in the song Magic Dance make reference to the 1947 movie The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer starring Cary Grant, Myrna Loy and Shirley Temple
"Hey, You remind me of the Man / Babe, What Man / Babe, The Man / Babe with the Power....".

Looking for Cary Grant's star? You'll find that two stars separate him 1610 Vine Street and Clark Gable, 1608 Vine Street. Must be a very popular little area. When did Grant and Gable receive their stars on the walk of fame? February 8, 1960. That is a very, very popular date. Many of our favorite old actors and actresses received the honor on that date.

I wish my life was a non-stop Hollywood movie show,
A fantasy world of celluloid villains and heroes,
Because celluloid heroes never feel any pain
And celluloid heroes never really die.

The Walk of Fame is a state-registered landmark. Ana Martinez, who produces the Walk of Fame ceremonies for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is a great source of information. You can contact her via the Walk of Fame web site and she sends out regular tweets. Their site also explains the process of nominating someone to receive a star.

Sadly John Lennon’s star was defaced by vandals just days before his birthday in 2013.

Frank Sinatra died May 14, 1998
Fans placed memorials on his Hollywood Walk of Fame Star

“I want people to know they can go to jail for this," Martinez said. "People can put out flowers or candles if they want to pay tribute. Graffiti is so aggravating." said Ms. Martinez ‏@wofstargirl (From a New York Daily News article)

One other interesting piece of info she passed on recently: Just because a celeb was selected for 2013, doesn't mean they have to do it that year. Recipients have 5 years to book ceremony.

Where is the Hollywood Walk of Fame?
"The Hollywood Walk of Fame is a series of stars on a public sidewalk which stretches on both sides of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street. It is in the heart of Hollywood.

"There is no dedicated address. The office of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce which administers the Hollywood Walk of Fame can be used as the only reference address for the famous Boulevard. 7018 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90028."

She fell for The Leader of the Pack in 1964 Dramatic song performance

Leader of the Pack
The Shangri-Las' hit Number One Nov. 28, 1964

Is she really going out with him?
Well, there she is. Let's ask her.
Betty, is that Jimmy's ring you're wearing?
Mm-hmm
Gee, it must be great riding with him
Is he picking you up after school today?
Uhn-uh
By the way, where'd you meet him? .....

Unfamiliar with this pop classic?? It's part of the genre of so-called teenage tragedy songs from the 1960s.

In November 1964 girl group, The Shangri-Las appeared on an episode of the popular panel game show, I've Got a Secret.

The secret : They had just acted out/seen a dramatic reading based on "the words to the Number 1 Rock 'n Roll song hit." Whoa Nellie.

In 1964 Steve Allen was host of the show. Other panel members were Henry Morgan and Bill Cullen.

Before The Shangri-Las came on, Betsy Palmer, Robert Goulet and Bess Myerson presented a dramatic reading of the lyrics (omitting the title).

Mary Weiss, Margie Ganser and Mary Ann Ganser appeared on the show. Betty Weiss sings on the record and band members lip synched her part.

In 1945 Bess Myerson had been the first Jewish American Miss New York and the first to win the Miss America pageant.

Mr. Roberts film Photo
Jack Lemmon and Betsy Palmer 8x10 Autographed

Betsy Palmer appeared in on stage in South Pacific and in the 1955 film, Mister Roberts. The stars were Henry Fonda, James Cagney and William Powell. Mister Roberts featured a young actor named Jack Lemmon.

Palmer is also well known for her appearances in the Friday the 13th movies as Mrs. Voorhees.

Leader of the Pack is credited to George Shadow Morton with Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. There has been controversy in regards to who wrote it.

The flip side of the single was a song called What is Love?

My folks were always putting him down (down, down)
They said he came from the wrong side of town
(whatcha mean when ya say that he came from the wrong side of town?)
They told me he was bad
But I knew he was sad
That's why I fell for the leader of the pack....

This is all 49 years ago. These fictitious kids in the song would probably be long since married and having issues with their own teenagers now.  What do you think? I love 50s and 60s songs and singers like the Shangri-Las.

Never knew that Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry, then her then-husband, who wrote Leader Of The Pack had a previous iconic number one hit. It was another song, Chapel of Love by The Dixie Cups. Have you heard this one at a wedding, bridal shower or bachelorette party?

Fun activities: Try reading the lyrics to one of your favorite songs out like a poem or dramatically as they did here. Have fun and do it in honor of The Shangs.

At your Thanksgiving table, a few of you can agree to recite the words to a favorite oldie, show tune or a current song. Do a little rap and beatbox while holding a turkey drumstick or piece of tofurkey

See how long it takes others to figure out what the song is or maybe even what the heck you're doing? Please send cell phone video of your creativity.
